Orange County streetcar costs top $400 million; construction start delayed until fall

Instead of starting this summer as anticipated, construction of the OC Streetcar in Santa Ana and Garden Grove has been pushed to the fall and the project’s cost estimates increased by more than $100 million.

The streetcar is projected to cost $407.76 million, up from a nearly $300 million estimate made in 2017. Orange County Transportation Authority officials on Monday approved changes to the funding plan, taking the additional money needed from Measure M2, a local sales tax earmarked for public transportation projects.

The streetcar’s purpose is to connect Metrolink stations and some of the county’s busiest bus routes with residential and employment hubs such as Santa Ana’s downtown and Civic Center.
